Indianapolis Social Media : Who Bells the Cat?
More info...
Long ago the mice had a meeting to decide what needed to be done to outsmart their enemy, the cat. Every mouse had an opinion, but at last a young mouse stood up and said "I have the answer. Our greatest danger lies in being unaware of the cat, and if we could create a signal that announced when the cat was near, we could all easily escape. The only solution then, is to attach a bell to the cat so we would always know when it was about"

And everybody applauded the young mouse's proposal, until an old mouse stood up and said "that's a wonderful idea. Who will bell the cat?". The mice looked at each other, and no one spoke a word.

The moral of the story is that it is easy to propose impossible solutions. Ideas without execution accomplish nothing, and are actually much more costly than no ideas at all. This might be a philosophically interesting point, but let's consider it in contemporary terms.

Yesterday the mice had a meeting to decide what needed to be done to create an advantage in a competitive market. Everyone had an opinion, but a last a young mouse stood up and said "I have the answer. Our greatest weakness is that people are looking online, and they're not finding us. If we could create an online presence - in the social sites, the search engine etc.- we could easily get their attention, and ultimately their business. The only solution then is to start a blog so everyone will find us and know what we're about"

And everybody applauded the young mouse's proposal, until an old mouse stood up and said" that's a wonderful idea. who will do all the blogging?". The mice looked at each other, and no one spoke a word.

Indianapolis Social MediaEvery business knows that having a strong web presence can benefit their bottom line. But what they may not know is having a website (or a blog, or face book profile or a Squidoo lens) requires active participation - it's like exercising a muscle. You can't workout once and expect to stay in shape! And you also can't just go in to the gym and do some bicep curls (post to your blog) and expect overall fitness. You have to train if you want to compete. In terms of the Indianapolis social media trainers, there are some great social media coaches available to tell you exactly what has to get done (two words are all you need to know: Kyle Lacy ).

What every company needs is knowledge, skill, experience and above all, execution. In order to have a robust online presence, somebody will have to go out and earn it every day, and every day you don't earn it, someone else will take it from you. Somebody has to be responsible for blogging and linking and submitting and posting and tweeting and feeding and bookmarking and tagging. If you want your business to be found online, somebody will have to bell the cat.
